John Howard Angas was fortunate to acquire cuttings from the Busby collection which he gave to his then gardener Samuel Smith, who founded Yalumba, one of Australia’s oldest and well respected family winery’s.
Ronald Fife Angas JHA’s grandson was the first Angas to plant wine grapes, around 1910, when he planted the Mt Edelstone vineyard, now know as part of the Henschke family’s wines. In the 1960’s Colin Angas took cuttings of the Shiraz in Mt Edelstone and planted them a little further north alongside an picturesque creek bed now known as Hutton Vale vineyard. A little later he sold the Mt Edelstone block to Cyril Henschke after over 25 years of a wine growing friendship and successful partnership. Colin had also planted a couple of other varieties, Riesling, Grenache and a smattering of Mataro all on their own root stocks and in a dry grown environment.
The 1990’s saw a new era and John’s turn to plant, with cuttings of the cuttings as well as Cabernet Sauvignon, a little higher up the hill East of his fathers plantings, and just South of Hill of Grace.
Today Hutton Vale continues with these two blocks, 1960’s and the 1990’s for their estate grown wines, Shiraz, Grenache Mataro, Cabernet Sauvignon and Riesling.
