Visit the Cellar

We welcome you to our cellar where you can have a personal tasting of both chutney and wine.

Hutton Vale is still very much a working farm and for this reason we are not always eating and drinking at the cellar door, disappointing as that may be!! A phone call to arrange a time is therefore a necessity, and we are always delighted to be encouraged indoors to sample the fruits of our labour with your company.

We conduct our cellar door sales is an strong old stone building built in the 1850's that has housed stud sheep, stud cattle, a stallion and even pigeons in the past. Restoration is a continual process but at this stage the work kitchen, herb garden, vegetable garden and cellar door are all functioning.

Further developments are planned, we can talk about those when you visit!

The Wines

The three varieties, Shiraz, Grenache Mataro and Riesling are all estate grown and single vineyard. The Eden Valley (referred to as the premium of the Barossa) has demonstrated rewardingly the complexity that exists within single region which is reflected in the wines.

Only a very small amount of fruit from our vineyard is for our own use. (For more information on the vineyard refer to the main menu.) After hand picking, the fruit is delivered to the hands of Chris Ringland and David Powell.

Chris has overseen the making of Hutton Vale Riesling since 1998. Like him we are delighted with the classic Eden Valley characteristics of citrus, floral jasmine and slight mineral. These flavours respond well to time so we try not to release the wine too soon and also recommend it for longer term cellaring.

David Powell works with the Grenache, Mataro and Shiraz. Both these wines are full and rich. The Grenache Mataro is outstanding and far from thin as is so often the case. This is a wine that is glossy in the glass, full in fruit and spice in the mouth and wonderfully satisfying out of the bottle! The Grenache and Mataro are co-fermeting and then rest in oak for 18months.

The Shiraz is released at 5 years of age after spending 18months to 2 years in a mix of French and American oak. The fruit intensity is the result of such a low yielding vineyard. It is without question a big wine.

Current releases available are 2003 Riesling, 1999 Shiraz, 2001 Grenache Mataro, 2002 Grenache Mataro.
